Director’s Note

As a poet-director, I'm drawn to Matei Visniec’s work because he is both a poet and a playwright, making his writing not just dramatic but also poetic. This affinity has led me to stage three of his texts so far, with Migraaaants as my fourth encounter. When I sought permission to stage my third play based on his work, he sent me Migraaaants and said, "Siavash, this is my last text. Read this too." The author’s note allowed any theatre group to perform the scenes in any setting, revealing a creative and different text. Matei wrote 30 separate scenes, each addressing challenges faced by refugees and immigrants. By piecing these scenes together, we could create a mosaic-like picture, revealing a text with a vital subject that concerns not only me as a Middle Eastern immigrant but every human being. Since 2017, Migraaaants has stayed with me, even during the COVID pause, fueling my eagerness to stage it. During my hours-long walks and quarantine days, I only thought about Migraaaants, and most nights I would discuss it with our dramaturge, Payam Saeedi, or work on its text, which has resulted in what you are about to see. Our talented and passionate team made the seemingly impossible task possible. Now, this realised dream stands before us, before you, and I hope you will love it as much as we do and think more about its important theme, just as we think more about it today than ever before. Here’s to a world where no one gets lost unintentionally.

Content Note: This show contains triggering subject matter such as coarse language and depictions of violence. Environmental Warnings: Strobe lighting, loud noises, flashing lights and haze.

Run Time: 80 minutes, no intermission.

The world premiere of Migraaaants was produced by Acti Teatro Independente in Turin, Italy in November 2016.

Two Thousand Feet Up Theatre Company is a proud member of the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA). For this production Ahmad Meree, Jamar Adams-Thompson and Andrew Chown are contracted under the Dot Policy with Canadian Actors’ Equity Association (CAEA).
